Scope and Content

Owens discusses his career as an anesthesiologist, his work with national medical organizations such as the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and changes in the relationship between anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists.

Biographical Information: Interviewee

William Don Owens earned his MD from the University of Michigan in 1965. Following a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy in anesthesiology, he trained in anesthesiology at Massachusetts General Hospital before serving on the faculty at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Owens came to Washington University in 1973. He became full professor in 1981, and he served as chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology from 1982-1992. During this period, he was also anesthesiologist-in-chief for Barnes's and Children's Hospital. In 1998, Owens served as president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). He became emeritus professor at Washington University in 2004.

Robert K. Stoelting, MD graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1964 and joined the faculty in in 1970. He later became chairman of the Department of Anesthesia.
