Notes
In this ninth installment of “More Than Meets the IRB,” we continue to talk with Thomas Rodebaugh (PhD, Associate Professor of Psychology, Washington University in St. Louis) about the ethics of research involving social media data. The use of social media data by behavioral researchers recently made headlines after the publication of a study involving the manipulation of Facebook user data. In this second conversation about the topic, we talk more specifically about the autonomy and vulnerability of participants in social media research. Topics include: the nature of consent in social media research, the blurring of lines between internet use and internet-based research, and practical tips on risk/benefit analysis and other key concerns of IRB review.
