Excerpt:
I first met you spitting venom at the nurse.
A prescription for three days in the hospital,
became four just waiting for the procedure.
Meanwhile, your belly continued to swell with fluid.
Then I met you a simmering pot.
Later, you were softer in many ways.
Your wrinkles relaxed in exhaustion,
yet your crows’ feet tensed in pain.
Your eyes longed for the strength to be awake,
not to be awake here,
but awake in your home on the beach....
