Description
Joanna Wang is a medical student. She shared personal artwork centered around her interest in the intersection of art and medicine.
"This multimedia acrylic painting expresses gratitude to the patients who make medical education possible. Whether by consenting to a medical student taking a history and physical exam, allowing a student to observe or assist with a procedure, or imparting a lasting impression that reminds us why we chose medicine, patients play a vital role in shaping trainees. Their generosity transforms moments of care into moments of learning. At the center of the artwork, one person holds a patient’s hand with both of their own. This gesture reflects that learning begins with trust, attentiveness, and compassion. The image portrays the privilege of being invited into moments that are often deeply personal and vulnerable. Surrounding the hands are handwritten reflections from my medical student classmates, each written on a popsicle stick and dedicated to a patient who left a meaningful impact. Some reflect on patients who allowed them to observe or assist, while others honor patients who offered kindness or patience. "Because You Let Me Learn" acknowledges that medical education is shaped by patients who choose to share their stories and trust with trainees. This piece honors that generosity and expresses deep gratitude to the patients who allow learning to happen."
