Scope and Content

Agress discusses his medical studies at Washington University School of Medicine and the University of Minnesota; his service in World War II with the U.S. Army, 21st General Hospital, in Algeria, Italy, and France; and his civilian practice in St. Louis as a physician and pathologist. He speaks about some of his professors and colleagues, including Evarts A. Graham, Ernest Sachs, and Lee D. Cady, and some of his experiences at the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis.

Biographical Information: Interviewee

Harry Agress (1908-1986) graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in 1932. He did his residency at Jewish Hospital and continued his graduate studies at the University of Minnesota (1935-1936). During World War II, he served the United States Army in the 21st General Hospital in Britain, North Africa, and Italy and retired from the Army as a colonel. Agress was a member of the clinical faculty in Internal Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine for more than 20 years and earned emeritus status in 1960.

Paul G. Anderson, PhD served as an archivist at the Washington University School of Medicine library from 1982-2008. He earned a PhD (American History) from Wayne State University in 1977.
