My patient is around the same age as me, and as it happens all too often to me, I am compelled by him. The old sayings of the physicians that trained me echo in my mind. “Don’t get too attached.” “Never work harder than your patient.” “You can’t save everyone.” “You’re going to burn out.”

He tells me about how his girlfriend threw him out of a car. His sister loves heroin and steals his money so she can buy it. She has overdosed a hundred times. His beloved brother died about a year and a half ago.
