Description

Dr. Joan Noelker is a faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine. She shared a story and mantra learned from an inspirational art teacher.

Excerpt:

“We’re learning to see.” What does that even mean?! This was one mantra of my high school art teacher, Mr. D. We did a lot of drawing from life, and Mr. D served as our model sometimes. He was this tall gangly man with a very calm, professional manner, but when he was posing as our model he would jump up on the table and very suddenly contort himself into a variety of positions, some of them out of Greek art, others like an advanced yoga pose, and he would instruct us to do rapid fire drawings, sometimes giving us a luxurious two minutes, and other times only 10 seconds to get the essence of the figure on the page...
