Description

Mackenzie Cappelle is a medical student. She shared a story about connecting with a patient.

Excerpt:

Footsteps, even those taken intentionally, are incredibly loud at 6:45am on hospital floors as vitals are taken, frantic handoffs are made, and medical students scurry between patient rooms to pre-round. I step into a dark double patient room, light flooding in from the perpetually lit hallway. I cringe as despite my desire to not disturb, every aspect of my role feels clunky and disruptive. I pull the curtain that cloaks and partitions Mrs. H from her neighbor to the side slowly, and it scrapes across the rails noisily. Despite my efforts to shrink and quiet every action I perform, it briefly crosses my mind that I will have to wake her regardless to perform my exam. She rouses slightly, and I move to match her newly developed left-gaze preference, sinking down slowly on my heels...
