Description

Dr. Sajal Tiwary is an internal medicine resident. He shared a story of cultural connection and caring for a patient like family.

Excerpt:

"As if She Were Your Own"

“I smugly accompanied my white intern to the patient’s room, saying things like “Don’t worry, I think I’ll be able to talk to her.” She was a frail woman, swallowed up in a bed meant for patients who averaged five times her weight. She had her mangalsutra (a religious wedding necklace) on and had barely touched the dinner consisting of steamed veggies “seasoned” with salt and pepper. She became my mother tucked into that bed, her voice railing against the quality of the food and diatribes about how white cuisine was god awful (no offense, guys).”
